Moscow, Russia, February 1917. As the tinder-box of Revolution ignites, Inspector Vladimir Lesnoy gets a vital lead in an investigation he has been working on for years - the case of a brutal serial killer. Aboard the Trans-Siberian Express, Lesnoy is intrigued by his fellow passengers who all seem to have secrets to hide. While the train rumbles through the cold, bleak Siberian landscape, tensions start to simmer and romance blossoms. When murder strikes, all the first-class passengers come under suspicion and it soon becomes clear that each one of them had a motive to kill, as well as the means and the opportunity. A classic whodunnit set in a time of social upheaval, which will appeal to fans of Agatha Christie.

I was very intrigued by the beginning. It was Russia before the revolution. Many characters were introduced in detail, but for a quite a few chapters no link among them became evident. The Trans-Siberian Train changed all of that.

Murder on the Strike of Five Russia 1917 edition by M P Peacock Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

A really enjoyable whodunit. ‘Murder on the Strike of Five’ is a terrific find with everything I want in a detective novel – a fascinating background with great atmosphere, vividly written, believable characters, a very clever plot with growing tension and a succession of twists. The background of the start of the Russian revolution is refreshingly original. The setting of the first-class carriage steaming along the Trans-Siberian railway is as full of period detail and skulduggery as Agatha Christie’s Orient Express. The denouement is deeply satisfying. Fans of Golden Age mysteries, railway detectives and Ethel Lina White’s ‘The Lady Vanishes’ will love this. Looking forward to more from the writing team M.P. Peacock.
There are distinct echoes of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express in M P Peacock's Murder on the Strike of Five, set on a train journey through freezing Siberia during the early 20th century. When a murderer strikes, one of the first class passengers is the likely perpetrator. But many have their own secrets to hide.

Fans of Agatha Christie may also recall to mind another couple of works, which I won't mention for fear of spoiling the plot.

Suffice it to say that this mystery has a wonderfully classic feel, and will appeal both to readers of contemporary murder mystery as well as fans of vintage British classics. There's a very satisfying ending.
An extremely well written and thoroughly ebntertaining read for lovers of dark crime. Highly recommended!
Such a great alternative for those loving Agatha Christie and the big Russians. A perfect combination of crime story telling and description of the Russian society, the average life of luxury of the high end minority of that misterious country. The author is able to keep you stuck to the pages, to maintain your attention and curiosity with a light and dinamic story telling.
Historical search for a serial killer intertwined with aspects of the Russian revolution, the fleeing of the aristocracy and theft of gold being transported for ultimate payment for war armament. Tones of "Murder On The Orient Express", and a surprise ending. Assortment of well drawn characters on a long train journey across Russia
I read a lot of thrillers, ranging from classics like The Maltese Falcon through to Nordic Noir and Mark Billingham. What I enjoy most is a good balance between the "page turning" momentum of the story and the description of the setting and characters. Murder on the Strike of Five gets this just right, which is surprising for a first novel. I like it when a thriller's setting is unusual (how many more are going to be set in contemporary London?), so Moscow, Siberia, and Russian Revolution work well for me. Finally, I'm quite good by now at guessing the ending of thrillers, but this one surprised me. Full disclosure I was asked to proof-read the book.
The serial murders are told mainly as a back story, through various letters over the course of several years, as well as brief scenes with Inspector Lesnoy hunting for his killer. The Potato Sack Killer had been striking throughout Russia for at least ten years, leaving Lesnoy and his people perplexed.

During the aging years, we walk through time, learning about Sophia’s friendship and devotion to Countess Tatiana. When Sophia and Tatiana’s father realizes that the countess is in danger, the young girls are sent away to board the train out of Moscow. However, their troubles don’t end there. A murder is committed aboard the train and each of the first-class passengers has the means and opportunity, as well as a motive.

I found that the plot moved steadily and was intriguing. The storytelling was tightly written, ending quite well. It really does give you an Agatha Christie feel. The characters were very well-developed, their conversations interesting. The narrative painted a beautiful picture to make it seem as though you were being swept away in the story. I could almost hear the locomotion in my mind’s eye. My favorite narrative scene was the beginning of chapter fifteen where we get the first sense of the train moving along the Siberian landscape.

If you are a fan of dark crime and enjoy Agatha Christie, I highly recommend that you add Murder on the Strike of Five to your reading queue.
